Scrunchies make an awesome knitting project. They are super beginner friendly and excellent for busting your yarn stash! In this post, I’ll be sharing my free Staple Scrunchie knitting pattern, which allows you to use any weight yarn and any gauge. Keep reading to learn more about the pattern and access it below!

About the Free Scrunchie Knitting Pattern

The Staple Scrunchie is a knitted scrunchie that can work with any weight yarn and any gauge! The perfect scrap busting project, make an endless variety of scrunchies to add some extra flair to your every day knit fits.

It is also designed to be seamless, so you can’t tell where the beginning of your work joins the end.

Sizing and Fit

This pattern is designed to create scrunchies that are 18" in circumference before incorporating the elastic. It gives you guidance on making three sizes: Small, Regular, and Mega.

You can adjust the elastic as needed for your preferred fit and hair needs, but this pattern gives guidance on incorporating elastic that should hug your wrist snugly.

Materials

Needles

You will need 2 sets of 16" (40 cm) circular needles.

The size of the first set of needles will depend on what yarn you're using. I recommend using a needle size that creates a nice fabric with the yarn you’ve chosen to work with.

The size of the second set of needles will be ideally one size smaller than the first set, but you can size down more if you don't have one size smaller on hand. (This second set will only be used when seaming the scrunchie at the end.)

*You can also use 2 sets of 36"+ circular needles to use with magic loop. However, guidance is not provided for how to do this.

Tools

  • 1 stitch marker

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

  • Measuring tape

  • 9" (23 cm) of elastic (recommended width: .25" (.6 cm))

  • Crochet hook of similar needle size to first, larger set of needles

Yarn

You can use any weight and any size yarn for this pattern! The amount of yarn you need will depend on what size scrunchie you make, as well as the weight of the yarn you're using and what gauge you are working with.

Gauge

You can use any gauge! You are more than welcome to gauge swatch before diving into the pattern. The gauge should be 4 in. x 4 in. (10 cm x 10 cm) of stockinette stitch in the round. (Need help figuring out how to find gauge? I give guidance in the pattern!)

You are also free to approximate your gauge. Please note that if you don't find your exact gauge before making your scrunchie, it is possible that the circumference of your scrunchie (before adding the elastic) will be a bit bigger or smaller than 18". When it is bigger than 18", you will have more folds in your scrunchie, and if it is less than 18", you will have less. Either way is cute and fine!

Techniques

  • Knitting stockinette in the round

  • Provisional cast on

  • Kitchener stitch

The provisional cast on and kitchener stitch are used to create the seamless design of the scrunchie. These two techniques may be new to beginners, but don’t fear! I include written step-by-step instructions, photos, and video resources for both techniques in the pattern. And both techniques are very handy to know for future projects!

Math

Because the Staple Scruchie allows you to use any gauge and any weight yarn, there is some math involved to figure out how many stitches you need for your unique scrunchie. In the pattern, you will find two simple math formulas that are written in an easy-to-understand way.

However, if you despise math, I’ve got you. In the pattern, you will find a link to a Google Sheet that has the formulas prepared for you. All you have to do is plug in your gauge (or approximate gauge) and desired length of the scrunchie (based on the sizes that are recommended), and boom! The math is done for you.
